Art auction will help preserve historic home

Local artists are contributing their talents to a silent auction that will benefit preservation efforts for the historic Verandah-Curlee House.
In conjunction with the April 25 home tour benefiting the landmark, the Friends of the Verandah-Curlee House Museum has been gathering artwork from local talent for an auction that opens for bids on Tuesday at the Corinth Artist Guild Gallery and ends on the day of the home tour.
"I'm very pleased with the variety of styles we have represented, from very minimalist to impressionist to photographs that look like paintings," said Guild President Sonny Boatman. "It's great that so many artists were anxious to be a part of this."
The gallery will host a reception for the exhibit of the auction items next Sunday, April 19, from 2 until 4 p.m.
Boatman expects to see some lively bidding for some of the items. He is particularly excited to have in the auction an atypical piece by the late popular Corinth artist Chig Biggers. It's an abstract painting that contrasts with Biggers' popular character and caricature pieces.
More than 50 pieces are included in the auction, which also includes other types of items, such as pottery, turned-wood pieces and stained glass. The art will be displayed at the gallery through April 23. On the day of the tour, it will be displayed in the garage of the 1906 home long associated with the Liddon family and now occupied by the Frazier family at the corner of Taylor and Fourth. Bidding will conclude at 3:30 p.m.
Each piece has a reserve price to ensure that artists are fairly compensated. A significant portion of the proceeds from each item -- as much as 100 percent in some cases -- goes toward the Verandah-Curlee restoration.
Artists and photographers represented include Jesse Ables, Tom Strickland, Florence Milam, Mallie Norwood, Mary Kirk Adams, Dot Courson, Sandra Carpenter, Judy Ferguson, Mark Boehler, Ray Fielder, Judith Lowery, Martha Albright, Lynn Haynie, Mary Dee Kemp, Tim George, Lisa Engle, Toni Spink, Orma Smith, David Rickman, Alice Prussia, Dianne Papasan, Cheres Pennington, Tom Strickland, Kathy Bryant Williams, Laquita Thomson, Elaine Vars, Jennifer Sexton, Sallie Dillingham, Julie Milligan, Erica Noyes, Joey Byerley, Virginia Briggs, Peyton Long Hutchinson, Edward Knight, Nelda Parker, Chig Biggers, Barbara Ward, Randy Parrish, Peter Bowman and Neely Woodson Powell.
Those who have items other than paintings and photos in the auction include Hinkle Creek Pottery, Ray Morton, Al Stables, Niles Hora, Helene Fielder and Phyllis Moyer.
Regular gallery hours are 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday at 507 Cruise. Tickets for the home tour are available now at The Alliance, tourism office and various downtown businesses.
