The
Carriage House history
The
Carriage House located at the corner of Taylor and
Fifth Street, was purchased January 6, 2006 by Mr.
and Mrs. Robert R. Willhelm.
The
home came into existence at the same time as the Frazier
home. It was built originally to store the carriages
used to transport the new owners, Mr. and Mrs. James
E. Creary who had moved to Corinth from Florida. The
fancy storage building later became known as the "Carriage
House".
It
has been said by some older Corinthians that after
the inception of the automobile that the Carriage
House was used as a barn for horses no longer used
to pull the Creary's around town. Others say it became
a chicken house for a period of time.
Shortly
after the Depression of the thirties the owner of
the now Frazier home, Dr. Claud F. Gilbert, died.
Mrs. Gilbert needed to dispose of the home due to
the massive mortgage of $55,000 against the home.
The bank holding the debt decided it would be best
to separate the Carriage House from the main house
and sell two pieces of property rather than one. In
this way they would more likely find a buyer with
the amount of money required. So the Carriage House
was sold separately.
On
March 9, 1946 this 75'x150' lot containing the barn,
chicken house and carriage structure was sold for
the "huge" sum of $100 to Mr. Thomas E.
Cooper. Mr. and Mrs. Cooper owned this property until
October 31, 1966 at which time they sold the property
to Mira Frantzman.
The
Frantzman family performed a major reconstruction
of the barn/chicken coop into the fine home now standing
at 714 East Fifth Street which until this day carries
the name "Carriage House".
Owners
following the Frantzman's were W.R. Grace and Company.
They owned the house a couple of years upon which
they sold the home to local Judge Mr. John C. Ross,
Jr. Following owners were Mrm Joe Price Comeman, Mr.
Gary Mitchell Greene and the current owners Mr. and
Mrs. Robert R. Willhelm.
Several
of the owners have added amenities updated the beautiful
home with dormers, a turret and the hayloft. A hay
beam is still visible from one end of the upstairs
over the garage. This will be a wonderful and interesting
home to our at the April 25 event.
